Established in 1972, Udawalawe National Park was created as a sanctuary for wildlife displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir.

The park is famous for its large elephant population and was developed as a conservation area for these majestic animals.

Today, Udawalawe is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see elephants in the wild, along with leopards, crocodiles, and diverse bird species.
